Westhill Nursery

Brief

We were appointed to transform a Victorian listed building within the grounds of Ryde School into Westhill Nursery, creating a nurturing early years environment that would inspire learning through imaginative design. Our role encompassed the complete interior design, developing a whimsical Victorian-inspired scheme that respected the character of the building while providing engaging, functional spaces tailored to the needs of young children.

Our Approach

Our concept celebrated the building's heritage while embracing the curiosity and imagination of early childhood. Original architectural features were carefully reintroduced and complemented with playful bespoke joinery, including a tree-shaped library bookcase and a feature treehouse within the classroom. Every element was designed to encourage exploration, creativity and independent learning, resulting in a calm, welcoming environment that supports both children and educators.

Challenges & Constraints

  • Designing within the constraints of a Victorian listed building while meeting the practical requirements of a modern nursery.

  • Creating stimulating learning environments that remained calm, intuitive and easy to navigate.

  • Integrating bespoke play features without compromising the building's historic character.

  • Balancing durability, safety and functionality with a warm, imaginative aesthetic.

  • Designing spaces that supported different styles of learning, play and quiet reflection.

  • Delivering an environment that would positively influence children's wellbeing, confidence and day-to-day experience.

Project Outcome

Since opening, the nursery has received wonderful feedback from staff and parents, with educators noting that the thoughtfully designed environment has helped create a calmer atmosphere in which children feel settled, engaged and excited to learn.
