Designing with Colour 🌈

Colour can be daunting, but it doesn’t always have to mean bold walls or all-out maximalism (though this can look fantastic!). It’s about balance, layering, and knowing where to draw the eye. Take a look at how we’ve balanced the use of colour in these spaces. ☝🏼

1️⃣ Pops of Personality - Do you prefer to keep your walls neutral? Introduce colour through cushions, throws, and fabrics - flexible and easy to refresh and feels clean and contemporary.

2️⃣ The Sandwich Effect - A rich blue ceiling and remaining walls for a cocooning feel, soft pink feature wall, and blue bedding tie together beautifully (a little fashion-inspired colour theory👌).

3️⃣ A vibrant sofa and colourful artwork inject energy, balanced by deep teal walls and the earthy textures of stone and wood for warmth and character.

4️⃣ Greens as Neutrals - Here the soft sage tone with off-white panelling create a calm timeless space, allowing the colour to sit gently in the background. Green makes an ideal starting point, often considered a versatile ‘neutral’ in design.

5️⃣ A Bold Twist - Sometimes, an unexpected hit of red - even in a bathroom - is all it takes to transform a space.

A peek at one of our recent projects at @rydewatersidepool 🤍 We had the pleasure of working alongside @acorn_designandbuild and @ermcltd on the transformation of the changing rooms 🌊

Thanks to government funding through the Community Ownership Fund, the facilities have been completely refurbished into a space that’s fresh, functional, and welcoming for all ages and abilities.

With layout changes designed to improve circulation and flow, the refurbishment includes new ceilings, energy-efficient LED lighting, upgraded vanity areas with hair dryers, new toilets, sinks, changing cubicles, underfloor heating, fresh tiling, and modern showers.

Our design features a complementary but distinct colour palette for the ladies and gents areas, brought to life with playful, bespoke signage that adds character to the space.

Now fully handed over, it’s great to see the new changing rooms open and in use by the community 🏊‍♀️💙

Mixing the old with the new ✨

Many of our projects involve renovating older buildings, with clients often asking us to modernise their properties while remaining sensitive to their original character and heritage.

Expert tips:

1. Honour the original features. Whether it’s exposed beams, sash windows or a worn brick wall - let those elements breathe. Don’t cover them up, highlight them with contrast!

2. Keep modern additions simple. Think clean-lined joinery, neutral tones, and subtle textures. This creates balance and prevents newer interventions from fighting with original architecture.

3. Use materials with soul. Natural stone, warm woods, brass, linen - these all age beautifully and create a seamless bridge between eras.

4. Let the history lead the design. Instead of working against the quirks of an old space, let them shape your layout, flow and styling choices. That’s where the real charm comes from!

It’s been a while since we shared some of our 3D visualisations, so here’s a little throwback to a fun project where we helped design both the inside and the outside of this home.

On the exterior we were asked to visualise a swim spa, a pergola, space for a shower, and somewhere to dry wetsuits, basically a dream garden setup!

We also proposed new materials for the front elevation, driveway, exterior paving, fencing, and created a full interior scheme to bring it all together.

A little throwback to ‘The Residents’ Lounge’ at @the_terrace_ventnor, a full refurbishment project with some amazing original features to build on.

From the arched windows to the ornate fireplace, the space already had a strong sense of character. We enhanced the period detailing with new panelling, introduced a soft base palette, and layered in colour through bold furniture choices and vintage finds sourced from across the Island. We really love how this space brings together the elegance of Victorian architecture with the clean lines and warmth of mid-century style.

The result is a space that blends Victorian charm with mid-century warmth — now the perfect spot for hotel guests to unwind, especially after a wine tasting (if you haven’t tried one yet, you absolutely should 🥂).

Because honestly what’s worse than sitting down to eat or drink and the table’s too high or the chair’s too low? Comfort really is key, especially in spaces designed for socialising.

Check out this gorgeous bedroom and en-suite from our recent barn project!

We focused on a rust red colour palette, layering different tones and textures to achieve a cosy yet elegant look in the bedroom.

In the en-suite, we opted for a statement marble sink and these stunning red marble tiles in the shower for a luxurious feel. Then, we contrasted this with rustic finishes to create a relaxed mood whilst complementing the barn style ✨

This kitchen already had beautiful bones so we kept the same cabinetry, and gave it a fresh face. A few tweaks - colour change, lighting swap, new handles and worktop, fresh flooring, and suddenly it feels like a whole new space.

Creating a premium master en-suite was the brief for this project – freestanding bath, double vanity, shower, and WC all included. With a few building quirks to work around, we’re pleased how it’s all come together! The @mandarinstoneofficial tiles we used on the walls and floor make the space feel calm and fresh. Another busy week in the studio—here’s a little snapshot of what we’ve been up to:

1-3) Emily and Tanya spent the afternoon at the Careers Fair at @rydeschoolwithupperchine chatting with some incredibly talented young people about their future plans. It was so inspiring to meet some budding designers and represent a little corner of the creative industry!

4) Floors are getting a fresh new look at our Wootton project—always satisfying to see progress.

5) Spotted a new range ‘Mas’ @toppstiles - great to see a sustainable range made with 95% recycled content.

6) Had a site meeting at Waterside Pool this week—exciting things happening!

7) Wrapped up the week with this view from a site visit today. Feeling grateful to live on an island with views like this!

3️⃣ Revisiting a past project as we move on to the bedroom and en-suite! We’ve designed this bespoke wardrobe for a vaulted bedroom, bringing it to life with a 3D model of the internal cabinetry. It’s going to add both style and functionality to the space!
