Victorian Country House

Interior design for a period property renovation, Isle of Wight

We provided full interior design for this substantial Victorian country house on the Isle of Wight, working closely with the owners from initial concept through to delivery. The project involved the renovation of a historic main house alongside a later 1980s extension, requiring a careful balance between preserving original character and introducing a more contemporary layer where appropriate.

Within the original building, the focus was on working with the proportions and architectural features typical of a Victorian property - high ceilings, generous rooms, and existing detailing - while introducing a stronger sense of identity throughout. Rather than applying a uniform scheme, we developed a considered approach that respected the building’s heritage, allowing each space to feel connected but not overly controlled.

A key part of the project was improving flow and usability within the existing footprint. Targeted spatial changes were made, including reconfiguring the dining room and one of the bathrooms to better suit modern living, while still sitting comfortably within the structure of the period home.  We introduced bespoke joinery throughout to support both function and character, including a fully detailed library and games room with a concealed door, designed to feel as though it had always been part of the house. Hidden murphy beds were also integrated to allow flexibility for guests without compromising the overall design.

Material choices and finishes were led by the context of the building. In the main house, we worked with a palette that enhances the sense of depth and permanence expected in a heritage property, while the extension was treated more individually, allowing for a slightly lighter and more contemporary approach.

Alongside the design, we coordinated the project with the main contractor, managing procurement across all furniture, lighting, and fittings, and overseeing installation to ensure a consistent and well-resolved result. The project is now progressing into a further phase, including the addition of an orangery, outdoor kitchen, and wider landscape proposals, continuing the long-term approach to the renovation of this period property.
